Early Paint Decorated Canoe Seat

This canoe seat came from Michigan and dates from the mid to  late 1800s.  This is most likely one of a pair that would have been facing each other in a canoe. The heart cutout and painted flower suggest love or courting.  The seat back is canted for comfort.   The paint decoration was done by an expert carriage painter with a good hand to create the elaborate design.   It is well constructed and sturdy enough for continued use.  Probably made of pine.  Measuring  21" tall at the seat back; seat is 15 1/2" wide by 13 1/4" deep (17 1/4" deep overall).  A great piece of American folk art!
