Carved Folk Art Lion

This early carved recumbent lion sits on a platform with his front paws on a ball or perch of some sort.  He is very folky, with a face that resembles that of the lion in the "Peaceable Kingdom" painting.  He is carved from a single piece of wood.  I am not sure of the wood, but it may be maple.  There are traces of an early gold surface that has worn off over time.  There appears to be some sort of inventory number or possibly a deaccession number on the bottom.  This stunning folk art lion measures 9" long by 3 1/4" wide at the base and sits 5 1/2" tall.
A great piece of folk art!
