This Federal period candle stand with a tilt-top is made entirely out of cherry. The center medallion is of figured maple that is surrounded by intricate string inlay. It has wonderful proportions with a beautifully turned post and delicately splayed legs that taper down into spade feet. The base of the center post has hand carved notches that its maker probably added to give it that extra special touch. The locking mechanism is hand carved and pivots to lock the top down in place. It has been refinished (probably done in the late 1800's) and was once adorned in a red painted surface that can still be found on the underside of the top and on the end of the center post. The red was most likely added sometime during the first half of the 1800's, but originally this piece was meant to be, and most likely was, a finished peice. It is in very fine condition with no breaks or repairs, just an early ink stain on the top. It measures 39-3/4" in height when up and 28" in height when down. The single board top measures approximately 16-1/4" by 22" and is nearly 3/4" of an inch thick.
