This lovely early handcrafted sewing chest dates to   the Federal period (late 18th to early 19th C.) It was most likely made as a token of love.  It has elaborate inlays to include a heart with the initials E. W., diamonds in all corners, and a Federal shield on the front.  It once had a heart-shaped escutcheon which had probably been ivory.  It sits on tiny bracket feet and has applied edge molding on both the base and the lid. (minor losses to edge molding).  The inside is comprised of a removable sewing caddy with green velvet pincushions and a metal rod for holding spools of thread, with a secret compartment beneath the sewing caddy.  (replaced  mirror). It measures 13" tall by 7-1/4" wide by 6-3/4" tall  This is a gorgeous early piece with a wonderful patina!
