19th C. Carved Lion Book Ends
These exquisite lion book ends are hand carved out of Lignum Vitae which is a native wood of the Caribbean and Central America, making it a prominent "Indies" wood; it is widely recognized as one of the hardest woods in the world due to its high density and durability. Thus making it very difficult to carve. Mid to late 19th C. Since they are hand carved each one measures slightly different. One lion measures 9 3/4" tall by 9 1/2" wide by 5 1/4" thick. The other measures 10" tall by 9" wide by 5 1/2" thick.
