Rare Wampanoag Indian Basket

This Native American lidded basket sits on extended feet and retains its original handle and hasp.  The decorative incising and style of construction is unique to the Wampanoag tribe. It is rare, not only for its unusual form but because these baskets were ubiquitous and functional throughout New England resulting in their heavy use and being worn out. Ash baskets were used for just about every function from carrying and storing garden produce, harvesting berries and other wild foods, gathering eggs, pack baskets, and clothing storage boxes.  Massachusetts, c.1880-1900.  Although this basket is considered to be in very good condition, It does have minor wear and loses consistent with age and use.
