American Lidded Document Box
This lidded document box originated in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The decorated pine box sits atop ball feet and has its original brass hardware that includes an escutcheon, hinges, and a ring pull on the lid. It is paint decorated with two baskets of fruit and cross-hatching on the front, with floral designs and cross-hatching on both ends. The lid is decorated with four shells and the edge has a leaf and vine design. All hand painted in multi-colors with yellow and gold accents on a black ground. The interior retains its original bittersweet primer coat. Ca 1830-1840. Measuring 5 1/2" tall by 10": wide by 6 3/4" deep. A superior example of fine decorated boxes.
Ex: Hirschl & Adler Galleries, NY in 1991.
