Remarkable 19th C. Wax Fruit Still Life
This still life consists of wax fruit and vegetables in a wax bowl that is housed in a deep shadowbox frame that is carved from three pieces of wood. Wax still lifes were done in the Victorian age of the 1800s. They held up remarkably well. This one consists of different grape clusters, strawberries, raspberries, lemons, pears, plums, a red pepper, and a pickle, all in and around a wax bowl. This is a heavy piece. The frame is hand carved solid wood that has been gilded. Measuring 28" tall by 24" wide by 5" deep. Condition: a few minor losses on some of the fruit; areas of surface wear on the gilded frame, all consistent with age and use.
