Smoke Decorated Blanket Chest

This outstanding blanket chest has an amazing, smoke-decorated design on a vibrant yellow ground.  Its talented painter was able to create a rare grid-type pattern on the entire front of the chest. It has a finely dovetailed case with interior lidded till, applied edge molding that is painted in a contrasting black, and original hinges.  It also has tall 6" turned legs that are mortised through.  And even the legs are smoke decorated! This chest is a desirable size measuring only 38 inches wide by 24 3/4" tall by 18" deep.  Even the 6-inches-tall feet have smoke decoration. Ca 1840. 

In fine condition with one small replaced strip on the back lid edge, quite typical of these chests.
