Scarce 18th C. New England hearth trivet. Most early hearth iron in this form originated in Pennsylvania; however, several distinctive characteristics stand out, such as the gauge of the iron, style of the hanger loop at the terminus of the handle, the tiny geometric ornament at the apex of the heart and the Yankee simplicity of execution. These distinctions make it much more likely the product of a New England ironsmith between 1750 and 1800. A comparison of this piece to two Pennsylvania-made heart trivets is illustrated on page 225 of Albert Sonn's exhaustive study of Early American Wrought Iron. The differences are unmistakable. Measuring 8-1/2" by 5".
